Economic Development in SE Alaska is resource based: timber, fisheries, minerals, and water. The abundant resources enjoyed by Alaska's First People brought settlers who built towns and communities. Southeast Conference works with Federal and State agencies to balance community needs for sustainable economic base with Alaska traditions to care for the land and resources. Tourism based businesses are growing due to a world-wide appreciation for Alaska's natural features. Resources, tourism, and developing industries depend on viable transportation, utility, and communication systems. Southeast Conference is working to link Southeast communities in a network that could not have been imagined by Alaska's pioneers.

Economic Development Issues

Implementation of the Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan (SATP) -

Southeast Conference working with DOT/PF and communities to meet current and future transportation needs.

Sustainable Ferries

Researching alternative management and operations structures that will allow reductions in Marine Highway System subsidies without reducing service.

The Southeast Intertie

Southeast Conference supports the establishment of a Southeast Alaska Electrical Regional Intertie Agency to provide steady affordable power for Southeast residents, and reduce the dependence on expensive diesel generators by our rural communities.

Fisheries

Changes to the Pacific Salmon Treaty, proposals for renewing Snake River salmon runs, fish farming and global competition all factor heavily in the fate of our salmon harvesting/processing industry. We continue to monitor these issues, and support our wild salmon harvests.

Southeast Conference supports responsible development of shellfish mariculture opportunities that address the concerns of traditional dive fisheries and other traditional uses, and allocates resources fairly. Based on current figures, 5,000 acres of aquaculture farms could provide Southeast Alaska with a $10 million industry.

In cooperation with ADF&G, ADEC, and Juneau Economic Development Council, SEC will administer a Sustainable Salmon Fund grant to explore Salmon waste utilization

Tongass Land Management Plan

The Conference continues to advocate for sustainable timber harvests that will maintain harvest levels and build new industry and products. We are also working to provide economic development assistance to communities impacted by the decline of the timber industry.
