EnvironmentHousehold Hazardous Waste Collection Program

The Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program in Southeast Alaska began in the summer of 1993 as a unique partnership between the Southeast Conference, nine member communities, and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC). Carson and Dorn, an environmental consulting firm was hired by Southeast Conference oversee collections. Harmful wastes are collected from communities and transported for proper disposal, rather than being left to contaminate community landfills. Many of these wastes include everyday products used in homes and small businesses that include small quantities of harmful chemicals. Examples include paint, solvents, cleaning fluids, batteries, used oil. The State/ Conference cooperative project collects approximately 13,000 gallons of hazardous waste each year.

Solid Waste Management

Southeast Conference has undertaken an initiative to form a workgroup to seek solutions to the increasingly expensive solid waste disposal problems throughout the region. We will work with other groups to collect various studies and data together, to evaluate current methods, and to conceptualize ways to consolidate, recycle and dispose of wastes. We will explore the state of the art in waste management, including incineration, and consider sites for a regional landfill.

Fish waste utilization

In cooperation with ADF&G, ADEC, and Juneau Economic Development Council, SEC will administer a SSF grant to explore the feasibility of new technologies to enhance the value of fish waste products.

Cruise Ship Issues

In the wake of recent incidents relating to pollution from the many large cruise ships operating in our region, the Conference participated in a series of meetings and workgroups. The purpose was to try and find a way to bring the industry, regulators and the concerned public into agreement on policies, methods, and compliance measures to insure that the ships operate in an environmentally responsible manner. We will continue to monitor this process to help balance the increasingly significant economic benefit of the cruise industry business in the region, with the potential environmental impacts of the growth in the business.

Community Watershed Stewardship Program

Southeast Conference is in the initial stages of setting up a watershed program to support salmon sustainability through the promotion, initiation, and implementation of programs that restore, maintain, and enhance watersheds in SE Alaska in order to protect the economic and social well being of the region and its local citizens.
