The concept of strategic doing was developed by the Purdue Center for Regional Development. In short, the idea is that complex projects (for instance regional planning) can be accomplished through improved leveraging of networks and shared resources. The idea is to focus more on collaborative networks and short-term actionable items rather than a single organizations or regions longer-term strategic plan.

In today’s fast paced world and in particular for civic leaders that may be volunteering in an organization such as the Southeast Conference or another regional entity, it is imperative that new tools are developed to ensure all interrelated organizations operate most efficiently and effectively. One of the basic premises is that many organizations are working in tandem to address economic development issues and the leveraging of collaborative networks strategically will result in greater organizational effectiveness.

The basic elements of strategic doing are:

What Could We Do?

Asset mapping – patterns, connections, collaborations -

What Should We Do?

Clearly defined actions that we can agree on -

What Will We Do?

A final concept of strategic doing and the piece that may take longer to incorporate is the collaboration piece or creation of new systems for sharing information:

How Will We Learn and Share?

Open Source Networks

Internal Tools

Through the Committee system already in place with Southeast Conference the final concept of “How will we Learn and Share” could be an easy fit for following through with the Strategic Doing Process.
