New Security Issues
September 11th caused a change in Alaska’s tourism, as cruise ships and air travel becomes more secure. These security changes impact many elements of tourism, and we continue to monitor new requirements, and work with the industry to make sure visitors to Southeast Alaska can continue to have quality experiences.
Cruise Ship Tourism
In the wake of incidents relating to pollution from the many large cruise ships operating in our region, the Conference participated in a series of meetings and workgroups finds ways to bring the industry, regulators and the concerned public into agreement on policies, methods, and compliance measures to insure that ships operate in an environmentally responsible manner. We will continue to monitor this process.
The laws may effect other commercial vessels, such as smaller cruise vessels, fish processing and catcher vessels, towing vessels and others. Much of coastal Alaska’s economy is maritime based, and we need to make sure unintended consequences don’t result from hasty lawmaking, that could affect our region’s economy. As the science progresses, we will look to the regulatory agencies to continue the dialog on appropriate regulation. We must be sure that the perceived threat to the environment is real and credible, before we mandate expensive solutions to a broad range of commercial vessel operations.
