Southeast Conference is currently working on an Alaska Marine Highway System study entitled "Sustainable Ferries." The study addresses how to balance statewide, regional and local ferry needs and interests, and the relationship between local and visitor routes and services. "The goal of this pilot study is to generate discussion among ferry users on what future levels of service will be needed and how to run the system in a more efficient, responsive manner" said Southeast Conference board chair, J.C. Conley of Ketchikan. "We want to provide the next legislature and Governor with a blueprint for changes to insure the long term viability of the System."

Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan

A Conference committee continues to work on issues related to the implementation of the Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan. Our members are meeting with DOT staff with the goal of evolving a financially stable system that can provide the service we need into the future, and to make sure significant local issues are addressed. We continue to seek support for full funding of our Road System in this region, the Alaska Marine Highway System.

Inter-Island Ferry Authority

We are also supporting the Inter-Island Ferry Authority on Prince of Wales Island, which began operations of its first ferry, the "Prince of Wales," in January 2002, serving their island with daily round trips to Ketchikan from Hollis.
