Better known as “Queen of Biomass”, Karen Petersen is the Biomass Coordinator for Southeast Conference. She lives and works from Thorne Bay on Prince of Wales Island, in southeast Alaska. Karen coordinates the Alaska Wood Energy Development Task Group, and organizes the bi-annual Alaska Wood Energy Conference. She began working with wood products and biomass an outreach specialist with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Cooperative Extension Service in 2000 and has spent the past 20 years learning about Woody Biomass Combustion Systems. She has a Master’s Degree in Rural Development from the University of Alaska, Fairbank, and an undergraduate degree in Agronomy from Washington State University. Karen is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who spent 3 years as an Ag-Extensionist working in rural Ecuador.
